In the 1960s, Brazil stood out as one of the fastest growing nations in the world, with the increase in national industry and a relatively cheap labor force, international interest in the country grew and with all this development came an increase in population.

At the time with just over 70 million inhabitants, studies projected an energy collapse for the country in a few years, if the growth rate maintained the pace, this raised an alert about the urgent need to increase the country`s energy capacity, which in season became a priority.

Study teams were hired to begin research to create a project that was large enough to meet energy demands, not only at the time but for the next 50 years, seeking to serve the southern and southeastern regions of Brazil, the country`s economic center.
