ERO - ERO Event Analysis Process and Analysis of EMS Events The Distinguished Speaker Webinar Series is aimed at advancing the state-of-the-art concepts and methods in artificial intelligence and cyber security areas. The series is jointly hosted by the Centers for Cyber Security and AI Research and the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS) at the University of North Dakota College of Engineering & Mines. Speaker Biography: Dr. Wei Qiu is currently a Lead Engineer of Event Analysis in the Reliability Assessment & Performance Analysis at NERC. As an EMS SME, Wei is responsible for analyzing the EMS events reported, understanding the causes, trending and working with the industry to develop remediation strategies. Prior to NERC, Wei was a software manager managing the EMS applications especially state estimation and real time contingency analysis at GE Grid Solutions in Redmond, WA. Wei earned his Ph.D in EE from Illinois Institute of Technology. He is an IEEE senior member. About the Webinar: The principal goal of the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) is to promote the reliability of the bulk power system in North America. The ERO Event Analysis Process (EAP) encourages a structured and consistent approach to performing event analyses in North America. The ERO strives to develop a culture of reliability excellence that promotes aggressive self-critical review and analysis of operations, planning, and other processes. The EAP also serves an integral function as a learning opportunity for the industry by providing insight and guidance by identifying and disseminating valuable information to owners, operators, and bulk power system users who enable improved and more reliable operation. This presentation delves into a multifaceted exploration of the ERO EAP, focusing on the Energy Management Systems (EMS) events reported through the ERO EAP, the performance trends of EMS over the last five years, and the prevailing common themes identified via the ERO EAP. By examining the industry`s challenges, this talk aims to provide valuable insights that unravel the past and illuminate a path forward to improve the reliability of the bulk power system, especially EMS. |
