EPC - A future-proof electricity grid: The backbone for clean energy and REPowerEU 15 November 2023 | Hybrid Policy Dialogue Speakers - Isidoro Tapia - Senior Energy Economist, European Investment Bank - Joni Karjalainen - Energy Transition Analyst, Climate Action Network Europe (CAN Europe) - Louise Rullaud - Head of Distribution & Market Facilitation Team, Eurelectric - Olivier Grabette - General Delegate for European Industrial Affairs, Réseau de Transport d’Electricité (RTE) - Vilislava Ivanova - Research Manager, E3G Moderator - Simon Dekeyrel - Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre In line with the objective of climate neutrality by 2050, the EU has set ambitious targets to increase the share of renewables in the European energy mix. However, to ensure the cost-effective integration of intermittent energy sources like wind and solar power, the EU`s electricity grid must become smarter, more flexible, resilient and interconnected. This is vital to ensure that the transition towards clean energy systems is not only sustainable but also affordable and secure. In light of the European Commission`s upcoming action plan to facilitate grids build-out, this hybrid Policy Dialogue explored the challenges and opportunities regarding the development of the electricity network in Europe and identified key areas for action in EU policy. |
