Dec 30, 2024 - Uruguay`s Sierra de los Caracoles wind farm drives 98% renewable energy

The wind farm in Sierra de los Caracoles, Uruguay, established in 2009, has played a key role in transitioning the country to generate 98% of its energy from renewable sources. Wind, solar, and biomass technologies have nearly decarbonised Uruguay`s electricity grid, making it self-sufficient and enabling energy exports to neighbouring countries. Residents, who once relied on homemade windmills, now benefit from sustainable power. The shift, driven by political consensus and investor confidence, has strengthened Uruguay`s energy sovereignty, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and supported sustainable development.
