Airborne wind energy (AWE) is a method of generating electricity using automatic tethered flying devices, such as kites or wings, to harness wind energy at higher altitudes where the winds are stronger and more consistent. There are three main concepts of AWE: ground-generation (where the generator is on the ground), on-board generation (where the generator is on the flying device), and the rotary concept (using a lifter kite to hold up a flexible structure of multiple aerofoils).
