Jul 15, 2025 - Poland builds first offshore wind turbine

Last Monday, Baltic Power - a joint venture between Polish energy giant Orlen and Canada`s Northland Power - installed the first offshore wind turbine in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea. Around 200 meters high, the tower marks a significant step for a country that for the past decade has been working very hard to build it`s offshore industry basically from scratch. It is also the beginning of a long journey, which after 70 billion euros worth of investment, will end with Poland getting around 30 percent of its electricity from offshore wind by 2040. To discuss this historic development we talk with Cat Brown, who is a Deputy Project Director at Baltic Power, about the challenges with the project, how the Baltic Sea differs from other seas in respect to offshore wind energy, and whether Baltic Power can deliver on its promise to cover 3 percent of Polish demand for electric power by 2030.
