Jul 15, 2025 - For the first time in history, solar power is #1 in Europe

Solar power became number one source of electricity generation in Europe in June for the first time in history. That`s a significant achievment for a continent that a couple of weeks ago announced it wanted to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040. A confluence of factors contributed to this outcome (including weak performance of nuclear power, traditionally #1), but it poses a question: is the European grid ready for more renewable energy? In the first half of the year, the Polish Transmission System Operator had to cut off solar panels to maintain the grid balance, resulting in the waste of 0.8 TWh of electric power. Wojciech Jakóbik, founder of the Energy Security Center, joins us to discuss the topic.
