Sep 4, 2026 - China`s solar power capacity overtakes coal for first time

Chinese solar power capacity has, for the first time, overtaken coal-fired power, a historic milestone in the country`s energy transition.
Data from the National Energy Administration show that, as of the end of July, installed solar capacity reached about 1.286 billion kilowatts, edging past coal at roughly 1.285 billion kilowatts.
China now has by far the world`s largest solar power base, accounting for a significant share of global installations.
The landmark reflects the breakneck growth of renewables and China`s accelerating shift toward a power system increasingly anchored in clean energy.
At the same time, coal-fired power is evolving from the backbone of electricity generation into a supporting and stabilizing role.
