Jan 7, 2026 - How underground hydrogen storage turns summer sun into winter energy in Austria

Enlit hit the road to find out how INNIO and Rag Austria have been demonstrating how underground, seasonal storage can be used to bolster system resilience.
Solar energy is converted into green hydrogen by means of electrolysis and stored in an underground natural gas storage facility in Gampern, Upper Austria. At 4.2GWh capacity, this unique project is the first hydrogen storage facility in an underground porous reservoir.
In this video, you will learn:
01:02 - What makes this underground hydrogen storage project and CHP plant unique.
01:25 - If and how the system is able to respond dynamically to fluctuations in power demand on the grid.
01:55 - How the system responds to extreme conditions, such as incredibly low levels of renewable energy, power outages or even intense weather conditions.
02:45 - How hydrogen is able to support RAG Austria as an operator with their key concerns, namely CO2 reduction and energy cost calculation.
03:33 - The technical process getting hydrogen from the underground reservoir, to the CHP plant, and then to the end user.
04:20 - If there is a way to use existing natural gas infrastructure for hydrogen storage.
04:44 - How Rubensdorf is a blueprint for replicating the technology.
05:05 - What success from the project will look like.
05:34 - What the response times are like to go from on-standby hydrogen to heat and power.
06:00 - How the project and CHP plant move the needle for Europe`s energy transition
06:28 - The consideration and hurdles for scaling up the project and its technologies in the future.
