Jan 8, 2026 - Largest Hydro-Electricity Generation by Country 1960 - 2025
From 1960 through the early 2000s, the United States and Canada were among the world`s leading producers of hydroelectricity due to early large dam projects (like Hoover and Grand Coulee in the U.S. and extensive river systems in Canada), but reliable global ranking data shows that China emerged as the world`s largest hydroelectricity producer in the late 2000s and has remained so through 2025, generating more hydroelectric power than any other country by a substantial margin—over 1,200 TWh in recent years—far ahead of runners-up such as Brazil, Canada, and the United States.
