Sep 2, 2026 - The Hollow Mountain: Cruachan Power Station
A hollow mountain, storing power whether rain or shine. While visiting Cruachan Power Station, the UK`s pioneering pumped hydro storage facility, Minister Shanks was joined - at the top of Cruachan dam, by Ian Kinnaird, Head of Flexible Generation at Drax. Together they discussed how Cruachan pumps water uphill to store energy before releasing it to generate electricity when demand is high. They also discussed how long-duration energy storage can support a low-carbon electricity system - and the skills, jobs and opportunities these projects can bring to local communities.
