Sep 10, 2026 - How stacked solar panels are pushing beyond the limits of standard photovoltaics
Oxford PV shipped the first commercial stacked solar panels in September 2024, silicon cells coated with a few hundred nanometres of perovskite that harvests the blue light silicon wastes as heat. Single junction silicon is boxed in by the Shockley-Queisser limit at about 29.4% and LONGi`s best lab cell is already at 27.81, while tandem cells have run from 33.9 to 35.5 percent in under three years. Here is how stacking works, who is building it, and the two problems, lifetime and cost, that still decide whether it ships.
