Oct 21, 2026 - The biggest problem with green hydrogen may have been solved
We need green hydrogen! I think we`re all clear on that much. But how can green hydrogen scale up to an industrial level if the electrolysis technology essential to it depends on one of the world`s rarest metals? All the iridium that humanity extracts from the Earth in an entire year would fit into a cube with an edge length of about 70 centimeters. That`s roughly the size of a washing machine. And one of the most important technologies for green hydrogen depends on this very metal. At current rates of use, our iridium reserves are sufficient for only a fraction of the electrolysers we`ll need by 2030. A Swedish startup claims to have overcome this critical hurdle in electrolysis—with a new electrode. Can it really save hydrogen production? We`ll explore that in this video.
