Oct 30, 2026 - The Economics of Grid-Scale Batteries Explained

Dive into batteries, renewables and US power markets on the Modo Energy Terminal, and talk to Ko, our AI analyst: https://modoenergy.com
From the outside, a grid-scale battery is pretty boring. It`s usually white and looks like a shipping container. So why is everyone building them?
In this Modo Energy explainer, we look inside grid-scale battery energy storage (BESS): what it is, why it gets built, and how it makes money.
What is a grid-scale battery?
Inside the container are racks of batteries like the ones in your phone, typically using the same lithium-ion chemistry. The difference is scale and duration. Some batteries, like iron-air batteries, can last for days.
Why are grid-scale batteries built?
Mainly for two reasons: grid reliability, because they can turn on or off quickly when the grid is stressed, and financial returns, because they can charge and discharge when prices spike high or low.
Why do renewables make batteries more valuable?
Intermittent renewable generation makes prices less predictable. Batteries help smooth that out without building expensive, fossil-fuel-heavy natural gas plants.
How do grid-scale batteries make money?
There are three main ways. Energy arbitrage, charging when prices are low and discharging when they are high. Capacity, being paid to stay available in case the grid needs them. And ancillary services, charging and discharging to help manage voltage and steady-state operations.
Why does location matter so much?
Markets, prices and need all vary by region, so where a battery is sited is incredibly important to its returns.
Why can batteries be built faster than gas plants?
Batteries are prefabricated and brought to site, so once you have the land they can be connected and start operating far sooner, often years earlier than a natural gas plant.
Battery storage has gone from an afterthought to what everyone is looking towards. In New York (NYISO), the entire interconnection is either renewables or energy storage.
