Jul 7, 2025 - Storms and the transmission system - how and why EirGrid prepares for extreme weather
EirGrid develops, manages and operates the electricity grid in Ireland. The grid supplies electricity for our homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and farms. EirGrid also plays a vital role in the complex job of balancing supply and demand every minute of the day. The high voltage transmission system is essentially the motorway for electricity around the country. It provides electricity directly to large energy users, as well as the lower-voltage electricity distribution system, which is operated by ESB Networks. The distribution system then provides electricity on to residential and business customers. It`s EirGrid`s job to ensure that power is always available to the distribution system. We have extensive plans that are activated to protect the system when a storm approaches, because of the potential disruption to electricity flowing through lines and to substations.
